More than 100 cars filled Woking town centre on 20 September. A 1956 Ford F100 won the public vote by three to one, on the council's highest footfall yet.
A 1956 Ford F100 pick-up truck won the public vote at the Seymours Woking Car Show on Sunday, taking three times as many votes as any other vehicle on display. Its owner, from Datchet, was given an overnight stay for two with breakfast by the sponsor, Hilton Woking.
More than 100 privately owned cars lined the pedestrianised parts of the town centre for the show on Sunday 20 September, alongside replica movie cars and costumed characters. Woking Borough Council says the event recorded its highest footfall to date (Woking Borough Council).
It was the fourth Woking Car Show and Seymours’ third consecutive year as headline sponsor. The cars filled the pedestrianised streets from Victoria Square, down Commercial Way and into Jubilee Square, between 11am and 4pm (Woking Borough Council).
What was there
The council named seven of the vehicles on display: a McLaren 750S, a Lamborghini Aventador with Italian stripe detail, a blue and cream Panther Kallista Convertible, a Triumph Herald 13/60, a vintage Aston Martin DB4, a Daytona Blue Pearl Nissan GTR, and the Hogsback Brewery’s custom bike with a beer barrel sidecar.
The winning F100 has a 5.7 litre V8 and an automatic T350 gearbox. Visitors voted for their favourite vehicle through the day.
At midday the Woking Rock Choir, 50 singers strong, performed on the steps of Jubilee Square, with a set that included “Somewhere Only We Know” and the Friends theme “I’ll Be There For You”. The Sporting Bears gave rides through the town and local buskers played through the afternoon.
The organiser is Terry Fox, a classic car enthusiast from Horsell, who said he was “enormously grateful for the support of our sponsors, Seymours Woking, McLaren Automotive and Hilton Woking, who made it possible”. He added that “there would of course be no event without the privately owned cars on display”, and thanked exhibitors who “got up early on Sunday morning and committed to spending the whole day in town”.
The Mayor of Woking, Cllr Rob Leech, and the Leader of the council, Cllr Ann-Marie Barker, attended. Cllr Barker said it was “great to see the town so alive” and that the show “shows what can be achieved when local businesses and communities come together”.
The footfall claim comes without a figure
The council describes the day as the show’s “highest footfall to date” and says it provided “a welcome boost for retailers”. It does not publish a number, and it does not say how footfall was measured or what the previous best was.
That matters more than it sounds. Footfall is one of the few measures the town centre has of whether an event works, and a record with no figure attached cannot be compared with last year’s, or with an ordinary Sunday. Nothing in the council’s August preview of the show gave a target or a previous year’s number either.
What it means for you
The show is free, it is held in the town centre rather than on a field, and it runs on privately owned cars whose owners volunteer their day. The three sponsors named this year are Seymours Woking, McLaren Automotive and Hilton Woking, with the hotel new to the line-up.
No date has been announced for next year. If you want to exhibit, registration for this year ran through the council’s own website, and the council has not yet said when it will open again.
