Woking exists in its modern form because of this railway line, and the trains are still the best thing about living here: the fastest services reach London Waterloo in 24 minutes, and there are hundreds of departures a day because everything from Portsmouth, Guildford, Basingstoke and Alton funnels through one set of platforms. The catch is that it is Waterloo or nothing, there is no Oyster or contactless pay as you go here, and the fast trains and the stoppers can differ by 25 minutes on the same journey. Woking: fast trains and stoppers on the same platform

Woking sits where South Western Railway’s main lines meet, so the service is less a timetable than a conveyor belt: Trainline counts around 366 trains a day between Woking and London, with the fastest at 24 minutes and an average of about 48 (Trainline). The spread is the thing to understand. In a single off-peak half hour on the live timetable you can see a 24 minute fast train, a couple of 27 to 33 minute semi-fasts and a 49 minute stopper, all to the same terminal (timetable data). Pick the wrong one and your 24 minute commute nearly doubles, so check the calling pattern rather than boarding the first train shown.

Every direct service runs to London Waterloo. For the City, the Waterloo & City line runs direct from Waterloo to Bank on weekdays; for the West End, the Jubilee and Northern lines connect underneath; and for Victoria or the Overground, most trains call at Clapham Junction on the way in.

How early and how late you can travel

Weekends and engineering nights change the picture, so treat the post-midnight trains as a bonus rather than a plan, and check the day’s timetable before a late night out.

The base season covers the train; the Travelcard version adds the Underground and buses across Zones 1 to 6, and the £1,520 a year between them is effectively what the Tube leg of a commute costs. If you travel two or three days a week, price a Flexi Season against the weekly figure before buying.

Tapping in with a bank card will not work here: buy a paper or e-ticket before you board.

West Byfleet and Brookwood

West Byfleet, one stop up the line, has direct Waterloo services taking around 32 minutes, with slower all-stations runs at about 45 (timetable data). It shares Woking’s fare band quirks but not its frequency, so the calling pattern matters even more.

Brookwood, serving Knaphill and the west of the borough, has direct trains doing Waterloo in around 39 to 43 minutes; it is often as quick to hop one stop to Woking and change onto a fast service, which the journey planners will offer automatically (timetable data).

Woking station is one of the better equipped on the network: step-free category A, with lifts and step-free access to all platforms, a 590-space car park with nine accessible bays, staffed ticket offices (the main office on platform 5 opens 06:00 to 22:10 daily), accessible toilets and a Changing Places facility (National Rail).
