A 30-year-old motorcyclist died after a crash with a van on the A245 Byfleet Road on Thursday. A Byfleet man, 44, was arrested. Police want dashcam footage.

A motorcyclist has died after a collision with a van on the A245 Byfleet Road on Thursday morning, 8 October. Surrey Police has arrested a 44-year-old man from Byfleet on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Officers were called at about 7.15am. The motorcyclist, a 30-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been told.

All of this comes from the force’s witness appeal, published at 2.27pm the same day. The force has not named the rider. It has not said whether the arrested man has been charged or released, and it has published no update since.

Police are asking for dashcam and helmet camera footage

Surrey Police says enquiries are under way to understand what led up to the collision. It wants to hear from anyone who saw it, and from anyone with dashcam or helmet camera footage.

What it means for you

If you drove along Byfleet Road between about 7am and 7.30am on Thursday, check your dashcam now. Many cameras record over old footage after a few days, so the clip may not survive another weekend. Save it before you do anything else.

An arrest is not a charge. The man has not been charged with any offence, and nobody should speculate about how the collision happened while the investigation continues.

Where Byfleet Road is

The A245 Byfleet Road runs east from Byfleet towards the A3 at Painshill and on to Cobham. Almost all of it lies just over the borough boundary, in Elmbridge. The police have described the collision as being in Byfleet but have not given a more exact location.

What the official figures show for this road

Road collisions do not appear in the police.uk crime data. The Department for Transport publishes every injury collision reported to the police instead, in its road safety data. We took its file for 2021 to 2025 and picked out the collisions recorded on the A245 between the Byfleet end of Byfleet Road and Painshill.

On that stretch over five years there were:

  • 29 injury collisions, with 37 people hurt
  • 7 collisions in which someone was seriously injured
  • no deaths
  • 10 collisions that involved a motorcycle, two of them serious

Across Woking borough as a whole, motorcyclists make up a far larger share of the worst injuries than of casualties overall. Over the same five years they were 181 of the borough’s 1,195 road casualties, about 15%. But they were 60 of the 262 people killed or seriously injured, about 23%.

These figures count only collisions reported to the police in which someone was hurt. Damage-only crashes are not included, and the 2025 figures may still be revised.
