Driving around Woking in 2026 means living with one big scheme and one big legacy. The scheme is the £42 million A320 North of Woking project, which has had the roads between Woking, Ottershaw and the M25 in traffic management since 2025 and now runs to autumn 2027. The legacy is Victoria Arch, the narrow railway bridge in the town centre that was supposed to be widened until the council’s finances collapsed, and which still squeezes every A320 journey through town under a two-lane pinch point. A320 north of Woking: works until autumn 2027

The biggest live works affecting Woking drivers are on the A320 corridor between the town and the M25 at junction 11, a Surrey County Council scheme with Runnymede Borough Council and Homes England, funded through the Housing Infrastructure Fund to unlock development north of the borough. The county’s scheme page, updated through the summer, sets out the current position (Surrey County Council):

  • Guildford Road, Ottershaw: temporary traffic lights from 4 to 31 August 2026, the piece most likely to slow a Woking to M25 run this month.
  • Holloway Hill remains closed while junction works with Green Lane progress, with pedestrian access maintained.
  • St Peter’s Way: the new traffic lights on St Peter’s roundabout, the hospital junction, are switched on and its traffic management has been removed; one eastbound lane towards the M25 stays closed for central reservation works.
  • Ottershaw roundabout: works are paused for environmental surveys, restart in summer 2026 and are expected to finish in summer 2027, with rising costs having already cut three planned roundabouts from the scheme.
  • Overall completion is targeted for autumn 2027.

M25 junction 10: the Wisley works are still not finished

At the borough’s eastern corner, the huge M25 junction 10 / A3 Wisley interchange upgrade, the busiest section of the M25 with over 300,000 vehicles a day, was due to complete in spring 2026 but is still in its finishing phase: National Highways’ closure listings for July and August 2026 show overnight lane closures on the A3 and around Painshill through mid-August (National Highways). The daytime layout, including the new gyratory and slip roads, is in place; the remaining pain is overnight. If you drive to Byfleet, Pyrford or RHS Wisley in the evening, check the road closure report before setting off.

Victoria Arch: why the town centre pinch point is staying

Every journey on the A320 through the town centre passes under Victoria Arch, the railway bridge by the station, and it is worth knowing that the plan to fix it is dead rather than delayed. The £115 million Victoria Arch widening scheme was formally closed in October 2023 after a project review found costs rising by more than £50 million and Homes England stopped funding it, with the council’s own financial position, a Section 114 notice and debts around £2 billion, ruling out any rescue (Woking Borough Council; BBC News). The key routes, and what they carry

  • A320 (Guildford Road / Victoria Way / Chertsey Road): the borough’s spine, Guildford to Chertsey through the town centre and Victoria Arch, and the main way to M25 junction 11. Carrying the roadworks above until autumn 2027.
  • A245 (Parvis Road / Byfleet Road): the eastern route through West Byfleet and Byfleet to M25 junction 10 and the A3.
  • A247: the north-south link through Sheerwater and West Byfleet towards Send and the villages.
  • A322 / A324: the western corridor past Knaphill and Brookwood towards Bracknell, Guildford and the M3.
  • The A3 skirts the borough’s south-east edge at Ripley and Wisley, reached via junction 10.

Parking, the station and the buses

If the roads are bad the calculation usually flips to the train: Woking station has a 590-space car park and the fastest trains do Waterloo in 24 minutes (National Rail).
