Woodham Road is booked to 19 October, High Street to 25 September and Woodham Lane to 27 September. The A3 Wisley exit slip closes on Wednesday night.

Horsell has three sets of roadworks running at once. Woodham Road is booked to 19 October, High Street to 25 September and Woodham Lane to 27 September. Between them they are the longest-running jobs in the borough.

On the trunk roads, the A3 southbound exit slip at Wisley closes on the night of Wednesday 23 September for urgent sign repairs. Holloway Hill on the A320 stays closed until early 2027.

Surrey County Council’s Woking register lists 54 sets of works, 27 of them ending today or later. Here is what is live, what is booked, and where to check before you set off.

The M25 junction 11 closure has gone from the schedule

Last week National Highways had the M25 clockwise exit slip at junction 11, Chertsey, closing overnight on Thursday 17 and Monday 21 September. The Monday closure is no longer in the schedule. The seven-day closure report published at 15:30 on Friday 18 September, covering 18 to 24 September, contains no M25 junction 11 closure at all (National Highways seven-day closure report).

We have not been able to confirm why it was dropped, so treat it as removed from the published plan rather than cancelled outright, and check on the night if it matters to your journey.

The M25 and A3 over the next week

The Wisley exit slip is the one to plan around. It is the A3 junction beside M25 junction 10, about six miles east of Woking, and it is the usual way off the southbound A3 for Ockham, Wisley and the RHS garden. Diversions are signed over local authority and National Highways roads.

The rest sit further out. Painshill is at Cobham, about seven miles east. Stoke to Hogs Back is at Guildford, about six miles south. The Hogs Back to Longmoor resurfacing runs south of Guildford towards Liphook in Hampshire, and Liphook Services is beyond that, in Hampshire.

The A3 southbound Ockham exit slip closures that we reported last week finished on the morning of Saturday 19 September.

Horsell: three jobs at once

Woodham Road has been closed for Surrey County Council highways improvement works since 8 September and is booked until 19 October. That makes it the longest county job in the borough (Surrey County Council street works register, Woking).

High Street has Thames Water in it from 14 to 25 September.

Woodham Lane has had Murphy Power Distribution electricity works on it since 30 July, booked until 27 September.

The register gives the road, the promoter and the dates. It does not record whether a job means a full closure, temporary lights or a single lane, so the length of a booking is not the same as the scale of the disruption.

Holloway Hill: the closure now runs into 2027

This is the change that matters most if you drive north from Woking. The junction of Holloway Hill and Guildford Road, about six miles north of Woking near Chertsey, has been shut while a new roundabout is built. Surrey County Council says it will stay shut until early 2027 (Surrey County Council).

The reason given is the utilities. The council says moving pipes and services around tree root systems proved “more complex than expected”. It had planned to lay a concrete slab to protect the new services. That slab would later have to be broken up and removed, meaning another round of closures. The council has decided instead to keep the road shut and carry on.

There is still no through route or access for any vehicle. The signed diversion runs via:

  • Guildford Road
  • Chobham Road
  • Old Chertsey Road
  • Stonehill Road
  • back onto Holloway Hill

For Hardwick Lane, the diversion continues via Longcross Road and Lyne Lane. Access to the White Lodge Centre is kept open down Holloway Hill itself. No traffic is allowed onto Holloway Hill from Guildford Road. Pedestrian access is maintained.

The finished junction replaces the two roundabouts at Holloway Hill and Little Green Lane with a single new one, with footpaths, cycle paths, crossing points, better street lighting and flood measures. The council expects to complete this phase in spring or summer 2027.

Ottershaw: still paused, still no restart date

Holloway Hill is one phase of a scheme running the length of the A320 between Woking and the M25. Surrey County Council is delivering it with Runnymede Borough Council and Homes England, funded by the Housing Infrastructure Fund.

The Ottershaw roundabout phase has been paused for months. The council’s most recent entry is still the 11 September update, saying residents may see activity at the site for routine inspections and surveys of work done so far, “ahead of works restarting”. It is explicit that those surveys are separate from the continuing processes with the county planning authority, and it still gives no restart date. Nothing has been added in the nine days since.

The pause remains while the council works with its contractor, arboriculturists and ecologists on protecting the retained trees around the roundabout and restoring a small area of copse that was cleared by mistake.

The current position on the rest of the scheme:

  • St Peter’s roundabout signals are on and the traffic management has been removed. One lane stays closed on the eastbound carriageway of St Peters Way, towards the M25, for works in the central reservation. The council says traffic management may have to be reinstalled for further works later.
  • There is a temporary 30mph limit on St Peter’s Way, in force under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order. It takes precedence over the 50mph markings already painted on the road, which only take effect when the works finish.
  • M25 junction 11: embankment works off the carriageway are near completion. Dates for the main construction phase are still not confirmed.

Overall completion is targeted for autumn 2027. Three elements were cut from the scheme on cost grounds: St Anne’s roundabout, Little Green Lane to St Peter’s Hospital roundabout, and St Peter’s roundabout to Ottershaw roundabout.

Live and booked in the borough

Surrey County Council’s street works register, checked on 20 September, lists 54 sets of works in Woking borough. Of those, 27 have an end date of today or later and 12 have not started yet. The newest job on the list is booked to start on 23 September, so the register’s forward view is only three days. Most entries are short utility jobs of two to four days. These are the longer or busier ones:

Affinity Water is the busiest promoter in the borough this week, with five separate jobs booked: Warbury Lane in Knaphill, Rydens Way in Hoe Valley, Albert Drive in Sheerwater, Balmoral Drive in Pyrford and Tregarth Place in Goldsworth Park.

The Connected Kerb works on Littlemead in Goldsworth Park and Regency Drive in Pyrford start on 23 September and run a fortnight. Connected Kerb installs on-street electric vehicle charge points.

The register also cannot show emergency works. Utility companies can notify Surrey County Council of a burst main or a gas leak up to two hours after work starts, and the council cannot refuse them. Check the live map on the day.

Trains: a quiet weekend, then a difficult Sunday on 27 September

Saturday 26 September has no engineering work planned at all. Rugby at Twickenham that afternoon does alter services, but none of the Woking lines: the amendments cover Shepperton, Reading, Chessington South, Guildford via Cobham, Ascot to Aldershot and Farnham to Guildford (South Western Railway, September engineering work).

Sunday 27 September has four closures, and it is the day to plan around:

  • Staines area closed all day. Waterloo to Woking via Staines services will terminate at Hounslow. Buses will run between Hounslow and Woking via Staines. Waterloo to Reading services are diverted between Clapham Junction and Virginia Water, calling additionally at Wimbledon, Surbiton, Weybridge, Addlestone and Chertsey.
  • Aldershot area closed all day. Waterloo to Alton services will not run. Passengers should take the Waterloo to Basingstoke stopping service to Farnborough, with buses on to Alton via Aldershot, calling at Bentley. Ascot to Guildford via Aldershot services will not run either, with buses replacing them.
  • Eastleigh area closed all day. Waterloo to Weymouth services will depart Waterloo earlier and will be diverted between Woking and Southampton Central, calling additionally at Guildford, Havant and Fareham.
  • Reading to Basingstoke closed all day. Reading to Salisbury services will start from Basingstoke.

Looking further ahead, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October bring closures in the Southampton Central area and between Fareham and Portsmouth and Havant and Portsmouth. Waterloo to Weymouth services terminate at Southampton Central, and on the Saturday Waterloo to Portsmouth via Guildford services terminate at Havant with buses on to Portsmouth (South Western Railway, October engineering work).

Also closed on foot

The second footbridge over the Hoe Stream in Woking Park stays shut. It closed in November 2025 over structural concerns and the council says it is no longer serviceable. The other bridge, which links to the skate park and Elmbridge Lane, was refurbished in August and has reopened (Woking Borough Council).

The Queen Elizabeth Gardens play area in Horsell, closed since 7 September for a new roundabout, monkey bars and resurfacing, was due to reopen on Friday 18 September subject to the weather (Woking Borough Council). We covered the works in our report on the Queen Elizabeth Gardens closure.

Victoria Arch: why the town centre pinch point is staying

Every journey on the A320 through the town centre passes under Victoria Arch, the railway bridge by the station. The plan to fix it is dead rather than delayed. The £115 million Victoria Arch widening scheme was formally closed in October 2023. A project review had found costs rising by more than £50 million, and Homes England stopped funding it. The council’s own position, a Section 114 notice and debts around £2 billion, ruled out a rescue (Woking Borough Council; BBC News).

The council has now formally written the scheme off. Its September 2026 report on selling the Triangle site says there is “no legal obligation to continue to protect part of the site for the bridge widening scheme”, and that Network Rail “has indicated there is no appetite to proceed”. The key routes, and what they carry

  • A320 (Guildford Road / Victoria Way / Chertsey Road): the borough’s spine, Guildford to Chertsey through the town centre and Victoria Arch, and the main way to M25 junction 11. Carrying the roadworks above until autumn 2027.
  • A245 (Parvis Road / Byfleet Road): the eastern route through West Byfleet and Byfleet to M25 junction 10 and the A3.
  • A247: the north-south link through Sheerwater and West Byfleet towards Send and the villages.
  • A322 / A324: the western corridor past Knaphill and Brookwood towards Bracknell, Guildford and the M3.
  • The A3 skirts the borough’s south-east edge at Ripley and Wisley, reached via junction 10.

Parking, the station and the buses

Is the M25 closed near Woking this week?

Not at junction 11. The closure of the clockwise exit slip there, which had been scheduled for the night of Monday 21 September, is not in National Highways’ current seven-day report. The only M25 closure near Woking in that report is the clockwise Cobham entry slip between junctions 9 and 10, from 10pm to 5.30am on the nights of Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September.

What roadworks are happening in Woking now?

Surrey County Council’s register listed 54 sets of works in the borough on 20 September, 27 of them ending today or later. The longest are SGN gas works on Woodlands Avenue in West Byfleet, booked to 26 November, and Surrey County Council highways works on Woodham Road in Horsell, from 8 September to 19 October. Thames Water is in High Street, Horsell until 25 September (Surrey County Council).

How long is Holloway Hill closed for?

Until early 2027. Surrey County Council originally described it as a full six-month closure. It has extended it because moving utility services around tree roots proved more complex than expected, and because reopening the road would mean closing it again to remove a protective concrete slab. The council expects this phase of the scheme to finish in spring or summer 2027.

Have the Ottershaw roundabout works restarted?

Not yet. Surrey County Council said on 11 September that inspections and surveys would take place at the site over the following week, ahead of works restarting. It has added nothing since, it has not given a restart date, and the pause remains while matters are settled with the county planning authority.

What is the speed limit on St Peter’s Way at the moment?

30mph. Surrey County Council says the temporary limit is in force under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order. It takes precedence over the 50mph markings painted on the road, which only apply once the works are finished.

Are trains from Woking affected?
