Joint Waste Solutions says Woking rounds run as usual on Monday 31 August. Martyrs Lane tip opens 8am to 4pm, and crews have been starting early in the heat.

Nothing changes for Woking bins over the August bank holiday. Collections go ahead on their normal days, including Monday 31 August itself.

Joint Waste Solutions, the shared service that runs collections for Woking, published the notice on Wednesday 19 August. It says there are no changes to bin collections over the Summer Bank Holiday weekend in Elmbridge, Mole Valley, Surrey Heath and Woking, and asks residents to “leave your bins out to be emptied as usual”.

That is worth saying plainly, because most councils move rounds on a bank holiday and many residents assume Woking does too. It does not.

What is running on Monday 31 August

  • Your normal collection. Whatever bin is due on a Monday round goes out as usual.
  • Woking Community Recycling Centre, Martyrs Lane, GU21 5NJ, opens 8am to 4pm. Surrey County Council’s rule is that for “all other bank holidays: usual opening hours apply”, with only Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day closing the site (Surrey County Council).
  • No booking is needed for the tip. Surrey’s guidance says you “need not need to book a visit to any of Surrey’s CRCs”, though you must be a Surrey resident and you need a van permit for a van, pickup or trailer (Surrey County Council).
  • The Revive shop at Martyrs Lane is open every day except Wednesday and Thursday.

Pedestrians can walk into the Martyrs Lane site. Tyres are charged at £5 including VAT per whole or part tyre, and business waste is not accepted.

Put your bins out earlier than usual

There is a live instruction that matters more than the bank holiday itself.

In a service update timed at 4.50pm on Wednesday 26 August, Joint Waste Solutions said crews were starting rounds early because of the forecast heat, and asked residents to leave bins out by 5.30am this week to avoid a missed collection (Joint Waste Solutions).

The standing rule outside a heatwave is that bins must be on your property boundary by 6am. Either way, putting them out the night before is the safe option.

The same update reported blocked access on Knaphill High Street on 26 August, with crews due to re-attempt those collections the following morning.

What it means for you

If your bin day falls on Monday 31 August, do nothing different. Put the bin out as normal, early, and expect the usual crew.

If your bin is not emptied, report it. Joint Waste Solutions asks residents to wait until 4pm on the collection day, then use its report a missed collection form or call 03332 340978, which the service update gives as staffed 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. There is a deadline: the form says a missed collection can be reported up to two working days after your collection day.

If you are clearing the garage over the long weekend, the Martyrs Lane tip is open on all four days, Saturday to Monday and again on the Tuesday.
