Canvassers are calling at 4,100 Woking households that have not answered the annual electoral register check. The deadline is Monday 30 November.
More than 4,100 households in Woking have not yet answered this year’s annual canvass, the council’s yearly check of the electoral register. Canvassers working for Woking Borough Council have been calling at those homes since Saturday 10 October.
The deadline to respond is Monday 30 November 2026 (Woking Borough Council, 2 October).
When canvassers call
The council says its canvassers visit:
- on weekdays between 9am and 7pm
- at weekends between 10am and 6pm
Each canvasser wears an official Woking Borough Council identification badge. The council asks residents to see the badge before sharing any information. If nobody is in, the canvasser leaves details of how to respond.
On the doorstep, one person from the household is asked to confirm the details the council holds and to fill in anything missing. Households have already been contacted by post, email and phone over the past couple of months, and some have had text or email reminders.
Adesuwa Omoregie, the council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said more than 4,100 households “need to act urgently”. She asked anyone who has moved home in recent months to check that their details are recorded at their current address.
What it means for you
If you have had a canvass letter or email and not replied, replying now saves a visit. Only one person in the household needs to respond, and the law requires the household to give the information asked for (Woking Borough Council, annual canvass).
The response should list everyone at the address who is eligible:
- people aged 16 or over
- British and Irish citizens
- qualifying EU citizens
- Commonwealth citizens who have permission to remain in the UK, or who do not need it
Replying is not the same as registering to vote. The council’s canvass page says plainly that answering the canvass, or paying council tax, does not put anyone on the register. Anyone added to the household form who wants to vote must also register separately, on GOV.UK.
This is one of the last canvasses Woking Borough Council will run. West Surrey Council takes over on 1 April 2027 (Woking Borough Council, 21 September). For what else is changing at the council, see our report on where the new council will be based.
