No Woking food business now holds a 0 rating, after the last one was re-scored in July. But 27 venues sit on a 1, and every single one failed on the same thing.
Not one food business in Woking borough currently holds a food hygiene rating of 0. The last one has been re-rated.
Ahmed Cash And Carry on Walton Road held the borough’s only 0, “urgent improvement necessary”, from an inspection in June 2025. The Food Standards Agency register now shows it on a 1, from a fresh inspection on 6 July 2026 (FSA register). That rating still means “major improvement necessary”, but the borough’s bottom rung is empty for the first time in more than a year.
The figures below were taken from the FSA’s public register on 2 September 2026, for the Woking local authority area. The council publishes results as it processes them, so recent inspections keep appearing for a few weeks after the visit.
August was another clean sweep
Twelve Woking businesses have August 2026 inspection dates on the register so far, and all twelve scored the top mark of 5. July was the same: 16 rated, 16 fives.
The August list runs from the station platforms to the villages:
- Cafe Local on Platform 2 and Starbucks on Platform 5, both at Woking railway station, rated 26 August
- Hoebridge Golf Centre on Old Woking Road, also 26 August
- Woking Community Grocery at Church Gate on Church Street West, 25 August
- Woking Community Hospital on Heathside Road and The Chestnuts care home on Chertsey Road, Byfleet, both 19 August
- A2 Kitchen at St Andrew’s Church, Goldsworth Park, 19 August
- Roberts Family Butchers on Gorsewood Road, St Johns, 18 August
- Simmons Family Butchers on Hermitage Road, Crown & Anchor on Old Woking High Street and Cobham Street Food at the Woking Snooker Centre, all 5 August
- The Yeti Gelato, 4 August
The 27 on a 1 all failed on the same thing
This is the part the headline rating hides. Inspectors score three separate things: how hygienically food is handled, the physical condition of the premises, and how well the business manages food safety. The FSA is explicit that “to get the top rating, businesses must do well in all three elements” (Food Standards Agency).
All three scores are published alongside every rating, both as words on the FSA’s own page for each business and as points in its open data, where a higher number is worse. Woking’s figures show how cleanly that works: all 495 businesses rated 5 scored 0 or 5 in every area, and not one of them scored worse than 5 anywhere.
Now look at the bottom. Twenty-seven Woking businesses currently hold a 1. Every single one of them scored 20 for management of food safety, the second-worst mark on that scale. Not most of them. All 27.
By contrast, only 10 of the 27 scored 15 or worse on food hygiene itself, and only 8 did on the condition of the premises. Five of them scored 5 or better on food hygiene, and 11 scored 5 or better on the state of the building.
Four are on a 1 despite scoring 5 and 5, near the top of the range, on both food hygiene and premises. Their management score of 20 is what holds them there: Tudor Express on Connaught Road in Brookwood, Khalida’s Kitchen, AQ’s BBQ Pit and Holy Trinity Pre-School at Woodhill Church Hall, Brookwood.
The Tudor Express entry shows what this looks like in the FSA’s own words. Hygienic food handling: good. Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building: good. Management of food safety: major improvement necessary. The inspection was on 5 November 2024.
In other words, Woking’s worst food hygiene ratings are mostly not about dirt. They are about records, training and the systems a business can show an inspector on the day.
Where the borough stands
Of the 778 establishments on Woking’s register:
| Rating | Businesses |
|---|---|
| 5, very good | 495 |
| 4, good | 137 |
| 3, generally satisfactory | 56 |
| 2, improvement necessary | 4 |
| 1, major improvement necessary | 27 |
| 0, urgent improvement necessary | 0 |
A further 56 premises are exempt from rating and three are awaiting a first inspection.
A low rating does not mean a business has closed, and it is a snapshot of one visit. Every business has a right of appeal, a right of reply published next to its score, and a right to request a re-visit once the work is done. Ahmed Cash And Carry is the example: it took a re-inspection and moved off the bottom rating.
Dates matter too. Of the 31 businesses currently below a 3, twelve were rated during 2026. One score dates back to November 2024. Some of these entries are well out of date, and a re-visit may already be booked.
What it means for you
Checking is free and takes half a minute. Search any Woking business by name or postcode at ratings.food.gov.uk.
Two things are worth doing when you look. Check the inspection date, because a rating from 2024 tells you very little about a kitchen in 2026. And open the three component scores rather than stopping at the headline number, because they tell you whether the problem was the food, the building or the paperwork. Those are very different things to a customer.
