Brookwood Cemetery's community mausoleums are full. Six new blocks with 84 chambers start in October; see the plans in the north chapel until Sunday.

Brookwood Cemetery is to build six new mausoleum blocks because its existing community mausoleums are full. Every chamber in them is now occupied or reserved, the cemetery says (Brookwood Cemetery).

The plans are on show in the cemetery’s north chapel until Sunday 13 September. You can drop in between 9am and 4pm without booking. The exception is when the chapel is being used for a private memorial service.

Brookwood is in Woking borough, about four miles west of the town centre.

What is being built

The cemetery’s announcement, published on 1 September, sets out:

  • six new blocks, next to the existing community mausoleums
  • 84 chambers in total, for families who choose burial above ground
  • construction by Greenbridge Designs, a mausoleum specialist
  • work starting in October

“Our existing community mausoleums are now fully subscribed, with all chambers either occupied or reserved,” said Avril Kirby, the cemetery manager.

Brookwood opened in 1854 and serves people “of all faiths and none”. It built its first community mausoleums in 2008. Ms Kirby describes it as “the largest cemetery in the UK”.

What a chamber costs now

Prices for the new blocks have not been published. The cemetery’s current price guide, dated May 2026, covers Community Mausoleums 3 and 4 in the North Cemetery (price guide). They are two units of 48 chambers each.

The price buys burial rights for 100 years. On top of it, the guide lists:

  • £500 for the first ten years’ maintenance, paid at purchase
  • a £739 enclosure fee when the chamber is used, which it says is subject to change
  • £76 for an additional inscription after enclosure

A five-year payment plan is available. It needs a 40% deposit, and adds 10% to the remaining balance to cover inflation. The guide also says prices rise with any annual increase.

Each chamber takes a coffin or casket up to 2,153mm long, 750mm wide including handles, and 591mm high.

What it means for you

  • This weekend is the last chance to see the plans before building starts.
  • The existing community mausoleums have no chambers left. If your family is considering burial above ground at Brookwood, the new blocks are the next option. Ask the office whether it is taking reservations yet, and what the new chambers will cost.
  • Expect building work near the existing mausoleums from October. The cemetery has not said how long it will take.
